I doubt it'll end up looking like that, but I wouldn't mind seeing a slightly bigger screen, also personally I'd rather have a lighter iphone 5 then a thinner one.. I kinda like the gesture area idea, I wonder if it'll be for flicking your thumb up, down, left, & right to access multi-tasking, although it'd probably be easier if it was done on the touch screen it self, considering its much larger..

I dunno, the XBox seems to be doing pretty well...

...Microsoft is very smart to leverage its successful XBox brand rather than its floundering (in terms of reputation, not profits) Windows brand.

I just hope Apple already has the name "xPod" trademarked.

And you're really going to use all that are you? With the exception of RAM and hard disks, most computer consumers never expand their computers.

Few even upgrade their HD's, i think apple users upgrade the RAM but that's only because Apple have *never* sold a computer (at least since the original iMac) with enough RAM.

One interesting think I have realised from going back to a PC laptop (i'm borrowing it and waiting for new MBP's/MB's) is how annoying many of the applications are, for example WinSCP, when you move a file across it brings up a dialog to confirm where you want to copy it to, even though the odds are 99.99% that you want to move it from the visible directory on the left to the visible directory on the right. An OS X application (eg Fugu or Cyberduck in this case) would never do that. Basically even if Vista is superior to Leopard in ease of use and features (which ain't gonna happen :p) because OS X app's are in general designed better I'd probably keep using a Mac, this is an excellent reason to switch too.

In the UK, there's a 4GB Reach bundle. Only reason I mentioned it.

Yeah I heard about that on a news site. They were laughing about it since you can't do co-op with them. Ironic.

Mine is the 250 GB though so should be good to go.

Do you trust Wikipedia? :) In fact the line above this one on Wikipedia says:

Everything I've read that is sourced to Intel says an add-on card won't be possible. It's my guess that the integration for Thunderbolt needs to be deeper than an PCI Express card, especially with its capability to carry video/data. It may be that Intel does not want people confused by data-only Thunderbolt ports. OTOH, I'm not a Thunderbolt engineer, so I may be completely mistaken. :D

Technical issues aside - odds are that Apple would rather sell you a new Mac Pro with Thunderbolt onboard.

I am not a Thunderbolt engineer either...in fact, it is interesting (and odd) that Intel is only now announcing the availability of a TB developer kit.

Do you trust the Wiki? While a grain of salt is advisable, I merely reference the item. It does seem to me, however, that the line you reference is talking about a non-GPU PCIe card. I had posted an earlier comment referencing the Intel position that there could not be a TB card (because TB must directly access both the graphics processor and the PCIe lanes). This means that there will not be a simple TB add-on card like adding a FW800/USB 2 card in the past.

The line I referenced seems to indicate that it would be possible for a TB controller to be on a graphics card (and thereby gaining direct access to the GPU) and have direct access to the PCIe lane(s) in which the "TB enabled Graphics Card" is mounted with true (video and data) TB port(s) on the outside.

Would Apple prefer to sell you a new machine? Of course they would. Apple have a well established, if nasty, pattern of abandoning the purchasers of earlier hardware to their fate (not co-incidentally, it is one of the arguments against the use of the Mac platform frequently aired by the PC community).

I believe I mentioned third party developers. If not I do so now. It would be an interesting project for a third party manufacturer to integrate a TB controller and associated ports onto a graphics card that is otherwise the same as a supported graphics card so that it would be recognized by the OS.

Whether Apple have tied access to the TB ports in some bizarre manner which would make this impossible only some clever engineers would know after looking at the new OS & hardware implementation. Apple probably could not care less, but it is a market opportunity for somebody nonetheless.

The reason for the earlier reference to the data only possibility is the reality that external storage for Mac Pros is severely hampered by the lack of a fast interface unless one has made the transition to fibre.

A good RAID array could challenge the current TB bandwidth, but I doubt anyone would complain too loudly considering the lack of alternatives and the degree of improvement over the status quo.

    Cheers

After Jobs walks out, but before he starts the Keynote. Someone should ask Steve to empty his pockets. First the mini, then the nano, this time should be the Video iPod. I am hoping for a couple more things this Keynote.
    Excellent.. excellent idea!

The update of 0.2mm seems reasonable. 1mm was a joke.

From the new comparison pictures, it looks like the top plate is responsible for the slight difference in thickness. Perhaps it isn't popped together tight enough? I'd try squeezing it really hard.

I wonder how much variance is present in the black model actually. I mean if you measured the thickness of several black iphone 4 models from different batches. Perhaps there is variability and this will occur with the white model too. Or perhaps the white is very slightly thicker.

As it is so small, this is not a problem. As the link in the update points out, most cases fit. The few that don't will have to be altered by the manufacturer. But I have to laugh at comments about owners of iphone 4 cases having to buy new ones for the white iphone they just bought to replace the black one. I seriously doubt that is happening to any great degree. And for those few who are buying white iphones 6 months or less after the black just for a new color, they are not going to complain about having to buy a new case. Suddenly after buying an expensive iphone just for the new color they are getting a sense of frugality? Right.

    Now on to better topics:
    1. Where is the white ipod touch?
    2. When will the ipod classic get a hard drive upgrade?
    3. Will there ever be an ipod tough 3G/4G? Will it double as a mifi?

Whaa? That young? I have a 4 year old MBP that just about copes with aperture.

    MBP = 4 years old
    iMac = 3 years old

And both will be upgraded to Lion. No problems yet , even 1080p content plays well, slight lag to catch up when RWD or FF other than that no problems. :)

Wasn't there a 'purchase printer ink' in Tiger somewhere? I don't have a printer at home so can't check... but pretty sure I remember us having the 'OS as a shop' discussion a couple of years ago.

    Future is lookin pretty cool.

Not sure how Thunderbolt works, as I'm sure not everyone does yet. But is this a technology that can evolve on its own? As USB 2.0 and 3.0?

Almost certainly. McDonald's has an aversion to being sued. Remember last time?

Of course not. They aren't the local constabulary.

But if no one called 911, they could be in violation of local laws that make it a crime to ignore a violent crime. Plus, those people in the video are clearly overweight. Certainly, McDonald's had a hand in that crime...

I'll get excited when/if Apple's Market share reaches 10%. Other than that, it's not such a big deal, IMO. :o

I like your idea and I think it would work in many situations if there is indeed going to be a "transition phase" toward a new type of connection format. However, I'll stick by my prediction as it offers the maximum benefit for Apple and its third party partners while keeping the whole user interaction simpler and more elegant. The Nike situation is different in the respect that it is really the only way to make a product like that workcan't have a bunch of wires getting in the way of running. I know the iPod Hi-Fi probably isn't selling well enough for Apple to worry that a new connection format would hurt their own profit margin much, but there are a LOT of third party partners out there that have only recently given it their best because Apple has probably assured them that the dock connector will be around for quite some time, so third party R&D won't be a black hole or recurring expense in that area. It is what has helped the accessory market evolve to the point it has, which has benefitted Apple immensly-don't think Apple doesn't realize that fact! It is also what is missing from the also-ran MP3 manufacturers: not enough consistency to make it worth their investment to produce for those products.

I guess we'll just have to wait and see. Of course, it COULD have both....

    how about

a 30 $ optional wireless receiver that acts as a female dock connector to plug into the existing iPod docks?

And then these femtocells. If they (the provider) can't give you access you're paying for, is it really fair that they charge you on top of what you're already paying, to sell you a device that is supposed to boost the service you're already paying for?

no, it's not fair - esp if other providers have good coverage in that same area. it's like you are triple paying - femtocell, wireless phone, and internet - just to get wireless phone which you were already paying for.

however for me, no cell provider has decent coverage in our home based on terrain/location so i will absolutely pay extra to get better cell coverage in our house - although it really hasn't been too hard to use the vonage line instead of the cell when we are home...but I would love to be able to get cell service for texting especially while in my basement theater/pub area.

and, yes i have already installed a cell booster in the attic without significant success.

Mine is definitely thicker than my black one. One of them (bought two today) is actually crooked.... when I lay it down on a flat surface it doesn't lay down completely... there is a "wobble" to it.. wonder if the case is warped.

Unifying features? Fine. Unifying the button/slides with the iPad version. Also fine. Creating that horrible leather look on OS X (vs. the iPad where it looks ok) ... NOT FINE. Fix the look Apple, this is the worst thing on a desktop computer since brushed metal. ;)

What happened to iCal from the Beta 1 Lion release? I felt that was a great unification of iOS iCal and OS X iCal (the layout was similar to iPad's iCal but it still looked like an OS X app). This new, giant brown header with embossed buttons and hard-to-read titles is just... awful.
